What impact has Trump on Crypto?

Allia iacta est - The die is cast: The 47th president of the USA is Donald Trump. Our newsletter is by no means about politics, but I can't avoid reporting on the potential influence on the crypto market.

Here is what Trump has promised:

  1. First things first: Replace SEC Leadership

👉🏽 Pledged to fire SEC Chairman Gary Gensler "on day one"

👉🏽 Aims to install more crypto-friendly regulators

👉🏽 Top candidate for the position seems to be “Crypto Mom”, Hester Peirce

✍️ BREAKING: Hester Peirce has presumably turned down the offer. Robinhood Legal Chief Dan Gallagher now seems the most likely candidate to take over.

  1. Create a Bitcoin Advisory Council

👉🏽 Goal: Create regulations "written by people who love your industry"

  1. Block Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)

👉🏽 Vowed "There will never be a CBDC while I'm president"

👉🏽 Considers CBDCs a "dangerous threat to freedom”

  1. National Bitcoin Stockpile

👉🏽 He promised to keep 100% of Bitcoin currently held by the U.S. government (primary sources are from crimes like Silk Road)

👉🏽 Positioning Bitcoin as a "strategic national asset”

But that seems rather unrealistic since:

  • Legal experts criticize the proposal

  • Concerns about diverting seized assets from victim compensation

  • Former prosecutors argue the plan contradicts current forfeiture laws

  1. Promote U.S. Crypto Dominance

👉🏽 Wants to make the U.S. the "crypto capital of the world"

👉🏽 He wants all remaining Bitcoin to be mined in the USA (obviously not possible)

  1. Expand Stablecoin Framework

👉🏽 Committed to creating regulatory guidelines for stablecoins

👉🏽 Facilitate the growth of stablecoins

👉🏽 Goal: Extend U.S. dollar dominance and to counter rise of alternative foreign currencies

State of Prediction Markets

Here is a picture of how Polymarket began from CEO Shayne Coplan.

Polymarket is now a popular prediction market that Vitalik Buterin and Elon Musk, among others, have spoken out in favor of.

The prediction market has gained attention and volume primarily due to the betting surrounding the US election. Polymarket processed $3.5 billion in trading volume during the election.

Compared with other prediction markets, it has proven to be the market leader.

There has been much discussion about the extent to which Polymarket's forecasts are biased, as they are based on the money invested by individuals. But the fact is that Polymarket was shockingly accurate.

Why Polymarket Was More Accurate

  • Markets incorporate diverse information without ideological bias

  • Traders are incentivized to be correct, not to create drama

💅 Nevertheless, it is important to note that it was one event from which one should not draw holistic conclusions. I see it as an interesting tool that provides an alternative view of how likely the open market considers certain events to be.

🤑 Big Winner: A mysterious French whale wagered over $40 million on polymarket bets over several accounts and recorded a net profit of over $75 million.

The French National Gaming Authority also seems to have caught wind of the win, as they are now considering banning Polymarket.

Regulators are examining Polymarket's operations and compliance with French gambling laws, potentially blocking access to the platform for French users.
